"Glyph" — Modernist Ceramic Sculpture

Glyph is a hand-built ceramic sculpture with a compact, relief-like silhouette that reads like a letter from an alphabet that never existed, or an archaic symbol cut into stone. The form is built from two gentle arcs and a rectangular niche, separated by an oval opening that pierces the block right through — it is this void that gives the piece its lightness and lets the composition live through space rather than mass alone. The outer surfaces carry a matte, granular coating in a calm, muted blue with a grey undertone; the interiors of the niches are left in the natural warm tone of fired clay, so the contrast of cool and warm builds the depth of the form.

The work sits deliberately in the spirit of 1960s modernist sculpture — simplified, faintly primitive, free of ornament, yet very carefully balanced in its proportions. It changes from every side: at times a letter, at times a gateway, at times a seat. It works beautifully on the floor against a wall, on a low console, a mantelpiece, in a gallery vitrine, or as a strong accent in a minimalist interior. Entirely hand-crafted: the building, texturing and firing are carried out by the artist personally, so the surface tone and small irregularities are unrepeatable in every piece.
