"Axis" — Slender Hanging Woven Wire Sculpture

Axis is a hand-woven hanging sculpture with an exceptionally elongated vertical form — a fine thread that swells at intervals into distinct bulbs and rings, then narrows again almost to a point. The rhythm of these constrictions gives the work the quality of a notation: it suggests a sequence of drops sliding down an invisible line, beads on a prayer cord, or a diagram of time. The whole structure is built from fine wire, loop by loop, using a hand-weaving technique close to knitting — with no casting moulds and no machines. It is many hours of work in which every stitch is made by the artist's own hand.

Despite its considerable height the object remains almost weightless and entirely semi-transparent. Light passes straight through the mesh, and a second soft drawing appears in shadow on the wall behind it; the faintest movement of air turns the form gently, so it never looks static. This is a piece made for interiors with height — a stairwell, an atrium, a glazed living room, a hotel lobby or a gallery space. Entirely hand-crafted; slight differences in the density and regularity of the weave are a natural feature of handmade work and make every piece unrepeatable.
