"Garden" — Hand-Painted Ceramic Vessel

Garden is a hand-built ceramic vessel of conical shape, narrowing to a small ridged foot and widening to an irregular, undulating rim. The piece is coiled by hand without a potter's wheel, so the walls vary in thickness and the form keeps a lively, slightly wavering outline. The surface is a landscape in itself: coarse grogged clay shows through layers of slip and glaze, over which hand-painted motifs have been laid — pink fans, yellow petals, green leaves, cobalt splashes and fine incised lines. The effect recalls a weathered fresco, or a fragment of an old worn wall carrying a garden painting.

The work deliberately avoids perfection — what matters here is the trace of the hand, the chance of the firing, and the beauty of imperfection in the wabi-sabi spirit. The vessel works equally well as a standalone sculpture on a shelf or as a container for fruit, keys, small objects or dried arrangements. It looks its best against raw wood and stone, and in pale minimalist interiors where the colour can breathe. Entirely hand-crafted: the building, painting and firing are carried out by the artist personally, so the colouring, texture and shape are unrepeatable in every piece.
